West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report

On the Upper Red Deer this week water levels have been dropping steady but remain above the seasonal high average. We can’t yet see the full impact of Thursdays rain at the time of this report, but we anticipate a slight surge in flows that will likely not have any major long lasting effects. In general, the freestone sections of the Red Deer will continue to fish well into next week. The upper tribs continue to flow at medium to high seasonal averages and many upper tributaries continue to produce and fishing has been great. We are seeing lots of late summer hatches popping off daily and we expect to see the fall feeding drive spark up shortly.

On the tailwaters of the Red below Dickson Dam flows have once again stabilized at the high seasonal average and water conditions as well as fishing have been good. The lower tributaries continue to flow below seasonal averages however with the recent drop in temps we anticipate that we will see conditions and fishing improve over the next week in comparison to the start of September. Hoppers and backswimmers are in full swing, and we will continue to see this over the next few weeks.

On the Stillwater’s this week we continue to see good Sedge hatches, but we are now really starting to see the Boatmen pick up! Minnow patterns and Chironomids fished deeper are also producing very well at the right times.

Out West in ES2 conditions continue to trend well and fishing has been great. We did see a short lull earlier in the week as nighttime temps took a decent dip compared to the last few weeks however mid day and afternoon hatches have been excellent. The ram continues to flow at the seasonal high average, and we anticipate that Thursday’s rain will impact it for a couple of days however effects should not be long lasting if at all.
