West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report

With the storm and rain events this week the flows on the upper Red Deer have surged visibility is very poor. We expect things to clean up nicely over the next week as long as we don’t experience anymore large rainfall events. If you plan on heading to the red deer this weekend don’t forget your streamer box! Much like the mainstem the upper tributaries have seen a water surge and visibility has not been great! However, this surge of water should cool down some of these tributaries from all the recent heat in the past weeks and we expect the tributaries to clean up and be fishing well again over the next few days you’re your on the water this weekend focus on the banks and calm water pockets for the best chance at success!

Water levels on the tail water section of the Red Deer river have been rising over the last few days as dam flows have been increased. Water temperatures have been average and water visibility has been good. We continue to see lots of dry fly action. Caddis, Pale Morning Dunes and mayflies have been most active! As well as an Abundance of midge activity. Nymphs and streamers have also been fishing well throughout the day! The lower tributaries have experienced a small surge and currently have some of the best water conditions in central Alberta at this time. There have been lots of hatches on the lower tributaries offering some great dry fly opportunities.

On the local Stillwater’s this week water temperatures have dropped down substantially with the rain and the fishing has been great. We have been seeing a lot more activity in the shallow water compared to past weeks. There has been a great number of caddis and mayflies on the water and lots of surface action in the mornings and evenings! Leech patterns and streamers have been great in the middle of the day fished at deeper depths!

On the western streams water conditions have generally been dirty with little to no visibility. Fishing has slowed down quite a bit with the surge in flows. Conditions should start to get better daily however, if you plan on heading out west this weekend be sure to check for road closures while planning your route. There have been some road closures due to road construction cleaning up road washouts as well as some roads closed due to wildfires.
