West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report

Flows surged on the upper Red Deer this week as the rain fell on Wednesday. Currently visibility is low however flows tipped down by mid day Thursday and there is hope that we may see it clean up a bit before the weekend. The wild card on the upper for this week is seeing how the fresh August snow on the mountains will impact conditions over the next few days. Many of the upper tribs are still in decent shape however a few tribs such as the lower James have completely blown out and may need a few days before they start to clean up.

On the Tail waters of the Red below Dickson Dam flows have increased as well however so far visibility hasn’t been as affected as the upper sections and fishing conditions have been ok so far. This holds true for many of the lower tribs including the Little Red which is still well below seasonal water level averages. This week’s rain should provide a dip in water temps for a couple of days. The dry fly action has been holding with hoppers starting to show up here and there and backswimmers beginning to make their appearance.

On the local Stillwater’s this week temps should take a dive between the rain and even snow at higher elevations. Watch for the boatmen to start showing up and keep an eye out for the dry takes as the have picked up again over the last couple of days.

In the West Country the mountain streams have been fishing well however conditions are still sporadic. The Ram took a beating with this week’s rain and is blown out yet again this season. Hopefully we will see things start to calm down now as make our way into the fall season.
