Explore Our Selection of Fly Lines and Backing
Fly lines and backing are the most important part of your fly fishing setup, and the most overlooked. At Rocky Mountain Fly Shop, we have a large selection of fly lines and backing from industry leaders like Rio, Scientific Anglers, TFO, and more. Our selection of fly lines and backing will help you get the most out of your fly rod and reel.
Fly fishing lines come in a variety of types and are designed for specific types of fishing. Some of the most popular fly fishing line types include floating, sinking, and sink tip fly lines. Floating fly lines are the most common and are designed for dry flies. Sinking fly lines are designed for fishing streamers and wet flies and are available in a range of sink rates. Sink tip fly lines are a hybrid of floating and sinking fly lines, with the first 10-30 feet of the line sinking while the rest of the fly line floats. This allows you to fish a streamer at depth while still being able to mend your line.
Backing is the line that is spooled onto your fly reel first, and is what connects your fly line to your fly reel. Backing is important because it ensures that when a fish takes a run, you don’t run out of fly line. Backing is available in a range of materials including Dacron, gel spun, and wire. Dacron is the most common backing type and is the most affordable. Gel spun backing is the most expensive and has the highest strength to diameter ratio, making it ideal for large fish and saltwater fishing. Wire backing is the strongest type of backing and is used for big game fishing.
