West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report

On the Upper Red Deer River water levels are getting good again and visibility is improving every day. The fishing has been great, and streamers and nymphs have both been very productive. Dry fly hatches have been hit or miss with the majority of hatches coming early mornings and evenings. The upper tribs continue to fish well but water levels are very low and stream temps have been quite high throughout the day.

The Tailwaters of the Red Deer below Dickson Dam continue to see good fishing conditions and flows have been great. Caddis and Drakes have been present daily and the dry fly bite has been good. The lower tribs much like the upper have had great conditions and the fishing has been excellent however water levels are low and continue to drop and daytime water temps have been getting very high.

On the local Stillwater’s summer has set in and water temps are very high. There have been reports of fish kills and heavy algae blooms showing up over the last week. Many fish are being found at deeper depths however the Sedges have been active and at the right moments have been producing good dry fly eats!

In the West Country conditions have been great and many streams are fishing very well. Bug life has been very active and the high country water temps have been no problem! The Ram water levels are back down to the mid seasonal averages and the fishing has been picking up.
