West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report

Flows are dropping on the Upper Red Deer River and tributaries above Gennifer Lake and things are really starting to clean up! While heavier water persists, Visibility has greatly improved and as long as we don’t experience any heavy rain events we anticipate decent fishing conditions for the next week. We expect to see flows surge again shortly in the next couple of weeks as the mountain packs continue to melt. Nymphing deep has been producing great results while streamer fishing has also had its days! Skwalas are still hatching along with other Stones and Caddis and Mayfly hatches have been present.

On the Tailwater section of the Red Deer River below Dickson Dam we continue to see good water conditions as we have seen over the last couple of weeks. While some of the tributaries continue to run dirty the main stem has held on well especially in the upper sections above Innisfail. We will be waiting over the next couple of weeks to see the impacts from runoff as the mountain water comes and the reservoir fills up but for now, we anticipate that conditions will hold out for another week. Lots of opportunity for nymphing on the tail water sections and we’ve been seeing some great dry fly action turn on now and then as well. Salmon flies have been present along with Caddis and Mayflies.

Local Stillwater’s have been fishing well with most of the annual trout stocking completed. Chironomid hatches have been present daily along with Mayflies. Water temps have been great, and we expect to see things pick up even more over the next week.

In the West Country many of the Cutthroat streams are starting to come alive again as the packs melt and the weather heats up. We are getting excited for the June 16th openers in many of the high country regions! Fingers crossed we will see good water conditions for the opener this year! We will have updated reports ready to go for next Friday!
