West Central Alberta’s Current Water Conditions & Fly Fishing Report

Water levels continue to maintain well above the seasonal average on the upper Red Deer River this week. Flows have been decreasing since last weeks big rain events and things are cleaning up nicely. Out by Yaha we are still seeing lots of silt as we have much of this season but generally water conditions are decent. Down by Sundre visibility is excellent and we expect to see this continue through the weekend. All and all the upper Red Deer is fishing well, and conditions are very good. The upper tribs are also experiencing good fishing and conditions apart from the James which is still dirty in the lower sections from last weeks rainfall event. Dries have had there moments but nymphing has been producing well all week.

On the Red Deer’s Tailwaters below Dickson Dam flows have almost dropped backed down to the high seasonal average. Fishing has been good, and conditions are excellent. Many of the lower tribs continue to flow at low or below low seasonal averages but fishing conditions can be good if the daytime temps don’t get too high. More and more terrestrials are hitting the water, and the backswimmers are now well underway!

On the local Stillwater’s this week dry fly action is picking up again with lots of sedges as well as smaller bug life hatching on the surfaces. Boatmen are on the move and expect to see them really pick over the next week.

In the West Country conditions are great to excellent with most mountain streams fishing very well! Visibility is great all around and bug life has been teaming in the high country. If you get a chance, we highly recommend that you grab your favorite beetle or ant pattern and head to the hills for some high country action this weekend! The Ram cleaned up nicely over the last week and has fished very well the last few days.
