Shop Our Selection of Chironomids, Midges, and Micros

Chironomids, midges, and micros are a staple in the diets of trout in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers. These tiny insects are a common food source for trout, and as a result, fly fishing with chironomids and midges is incredibly effective. The challenge with chironomid fishing is that these insects are so small that they're often overlooked by anglers. However, despite their size, chironomids can be easily imitated with the right fly patterns and presentation.

What are Chironomids, Midges, and Micros?

Chironomids, midges, and micros are all names for the same family of insects. They belong to the family Chironomidae, which is the largest family of insects in the world. These tiny insects are closely related to mosquitoes, but they don't bite. In fact, they're so small that they're often overlooked by anglers. However, chironomids and midges are a staple in the diet of trout, and as a result, they're an incredibly important fly pattern for fly fishing. Chironomids are found in almost every body of water, from small streams and rivers to large lakes and reservoirs. They thrive in still water, which means that they're an important food source for trout in stillwater environments. Chironomids are typically found in shallow water, and they are most active in the spring and fall. Midges are the same as chironomids, and the term "midge" is often used interchangeably with "chironomid." Micros are simply smaller chironomids.

Chironomid Fly Fishing

The small size of chironomids and the flies used to imitate them can make chironomid fishing seem intimidating, but it is a highly accessible method of fly fishing that is both effective and simple. By using chironomid fly patterns like the chromie, the black beauty, and the zebra midge and fishing them under an indicator, you can effectively target fish that are feeding on chironomid larvae in stillwater environments. Chironomids are a staple food source for fish in lakes and slow-moving rivers, and understanding how to fish them can make you a much more effective stillwater angler.
